Chronicle.
As a Justiciary hand,
the Bug appeared between Bits and Bytes
(PETER NORTON).
Peter Norton, Born November
14, 1943, in Aberdeen, Washington, USA, is
well-known in the personal computing arena for both his writing and
programming. Starting in the earliest days of the IBM Personal Computer, he
began writing about the IBM, helping other people understand how these wonderful
machines work. He has written a half a dozen books on the PC family, including
the best-selling Inside the IBM PC; his columns appear in each issue of PC
and PC Week magazines. His set of
programs called The Norton Utilities has helped many PC users rescue
lost data and explore the inner workings of their computers. Peter grew up in
Seattle, Washington, attended Red College in Portland, Oregon; he now
lives in Santa Monica, California with
his wife and two children.
Computer-related
contributions
- American programmer, software publisher, author, and
philanthropist.
- Known for the computer
programs and books that bear his name. Norton sold his PC software
business to Symantec Corporation
in 1990.
- In 1982, he
founded Peter Norton Computing with $30,000 and an IBM computer.
Norton Utilities included Norton's popular UNERASE tool to retrieve erased
data from DOS disks.
- He began writing monthly columns in 1982 for PC
Magazine and later PC Week magazine as well, which he wrote until 1987. He soon became
recognized as a principal authority on IBM personal computer technology.
Significant publications
- Peter Norton's Intro to Computers 6/e (2004).
- Peter Norton's New
Inside the PC (2002).
- Peter Norton's Complete
Guide to DOS 6.22 (1994).
- The Peter Norton Programmer's Guide to the IBM PC (1985).
Honors and awards
- Named
"Entrepreneur of the Year" by Arthur Young & Co (1988).
Clandestine History.
why do we talk about
bits bytes and bugs.
One reason, is that assembly language programs are at the heart of any IBM
PC, AT, PS/2 or compatible computer. In relation to all other programming
languages, assembly language is the lowest common denominator. It takes you
closer to the machine than higher-level languages do, so learning assembly
language also means learning to understand the microprocessor inside your computer.
Once you understand the microprocessor inside your PC, many elements you'll
see in other programs and in high-level languages will have greater meaning for
you.
Computers to counts to five does it like this: 1, 10, 11, 100, 101. The
numbers 10, 11, 100, and so on are binary numbers , based a number system with
only two digits, one and zero, instead of the ten associated with our more
familiar decimal numbers. Thus, the binary number 10 is equivalent to the decimal
number we know a two.
We're interested in binary numbers because they are the form in which
numbers are used by the microprocesor
inside your computer. But while computers thrive on binary numbers, those
strings of ones and zeros can be long and cumbersome to write out. The
solution? Hexadecimal numbers-a far more compact way to write binary numbers.
This makes it essential to learn to write numbers in both hexadecimal and
binary. And at the same time that you learn how computers count, you should
also learn how they store numbers in bits and bytes.
A Bit: is any Binary value Zero or one, and a Byte: is a grouping of eight
bits.
DEBUG.
Why does this program carry the name Debug? Bugs, in the computer world,
are mistakes in a program. A working program has no bugs, while a non-working
or "limping" program has at least one bug. By using Debug to run a
program one instruction at a time, and watching how the program works, we can
find mistakes and correct them. This is
known as debugging, hence the name Debug.
According to computer folklore, the term debugging stems from the early days
of computing in particular, a day on which the Mark I computer at Harvard failed.
After a long search, the technicians found the source of their troubles: a
small moth caught between the contacts of a relay. The technicians
removed the moth and wrote a note in the log book about
"debugging" the Mark I.
Now we know enough to do something solid, so roll up your sleeves and flex
your fingers.
Now that we know enough, roll up your sleeves and flex your fingers.
Welcome to the wonderful World of Software Development.
